Conclusion: Leukoplakia of the lateral tongue is highly coexistent with malignancy, and incisional biopsy frequently leads to underdiagnosis. Therefore, complete excision with adequate margin is warranted for leukoplakia of the lateral tongue, preferably under general anesthesia, which could be performed with minimal morbidity and function preservation.

Approximately 40% of leukoplakias exhibit keratinizing dysplasia; the remainder are characterized by hyperkeratosis alone. Annual malignant transformation rate is 3% and most strongly predicted by presence of dysplasia on biopsy; increasing duration, increasing size and nonhomogenous appearance also associated with malignant transformation.
INTRODUCTION. Oral leukoplakia is an oral potentially malignant disorder (OPMD) that presents as white patches of the oral mucosa. According to the World Health Organization, the term leukoplakia should be reserved for "white plaques of questionable risk, having excluded other known diseases or disorders that carry no increased risk for cancer" [].A separate disorder that is not premalignant

Results: Tongue leukoplakia tissues with high CD163 + macrophage infiltration were associated with significantly higher degrees of epithelial dysplasia, abnormal Ki-67 expression and cytokeratin13 loss when compared with the tissues with low CD163 + macrophage infiltration.
